An alternative spelling of the name is 海 門 岳 meaning " Sea Gate Summit", as it is located at the exit of Kagoshima Bay to the East China Sea . At the foot of the mountain is the Hirakiki Shrine , the former First Shrine of Satsuma, and the mountain was also called Hirakiki-dake ( 枚 聞 岳 ).
