List of sculptures at the Dresden Zwinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of sculptures at the Dresden Zwinger gives an overview of the free-standing sculptures (large figures) of the Dresden Zwinger, a cultural monument in the inner old town of the Saxon state capital Dresden. The Zwinger was built in the years 1712–1728 by Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann and Balthasar Permoser .

The description of the sculptures is based on the information provided by Dürre for the individual locations. According to Dürre (as of 2002), 672 locations are occupied, of which 536 are free-standing sculptures (including 132 large figures, 168 putti and 236 vases) and 136 seated figures, seated putti , crowns, flowers and building-related sculptures. Only the large figures are considered in the list.

Construction phases, builders and sculptors

After the drought, there were a total of 9 kennel construction phases or restorations:

  • 1712–1728 development phase under Matthäus Daniel Pöppelmann (1662–1736)
  • 1783–1795 1st Zwinger restoration
  • 1852-1857
  • 1857–1863 2nd Zwinger restoration under Karl Moritz Haenel (1809–1880)
  • 1880–1898 3rd Zwinger restoration
  • 1911-1915
  • 1924–1936 4th Zwinger restoration under Hubert Georg Ermisch (1883–1951) and Georg Wrba (1872–1939)
  • 1945–1963 5th Zwinger restoration under Ermisch, Max Zimmermann (1881–1962) and Arthur Frenzel (1899–1975)
  • 1963-2002

The Zwingerbauhütte has existed since 1924 .

The installation or relocation of sculptures (including new creations and copies) took place in the following construction phases:

  • I 1712-1728
  • II 1783-1795
  • III 1852-1863
  • IV 1924-1936
  • V 1945–1963
  • VI 1963-2002

The main sculptors involved were:

After the sculptures were recorded by the Zwingerbauhütte, there were around 54 large figures, 48 putti and 92 vases in 1728. In the years 1783–1795, 36 large figures, 1 putto and numerous vases were added.

In the years 1852–1862 it was restored after the fire caused by the May fights in 1849. Under Ernst Julius Hähnel (Hähnel School) 11 large figures, 29 putti and 4 vases were created.

In the years 1924–1936 under Ermisch and Wrba, 10 large nymphs and 10 small nymphs were newly created and 338 copies were made (55 large figures, 98 putti and 185 vases). After that, the Zwinger was considered complete, with a total of 620 sculptures. During this time, attempts were made to restore the “stylistic purity of the Permoser period”, whereby Hähnel figures were also replaced. Hugo Ermisch recorded all sculptures in the so-called Ermisch card index.

In 1945, 218 sculptures, of which 47 were large figures, 74 putti and 97 vases were destroyed. In the years 1945–1963 under Hugo Ermisch (until 1951) and Albert Braun (until 1962) or Fritz Schlesinger (from 1962) the destroyed sculptures were restored and the state of 1936 was roughly restored.

List of Zwinger sculptures in other locations

Some sculptures from the Zwinger were set up in 1979 on Neustädter Hauptstrasse. They have since been removed and stored in the Dresden Lapidarium because the location there has proven to be inexpedient.
