Johann Christian Kirchner

Johann Christian Kirchner (born August 17, 1691 in Merseburg , † December 28, 1732 in Dresden ) was a sculptor at the Saxon court .

Life

In 1712 he came to Dresden and worked in the sculpture workshop of Balthasar Permoser at the Zwinger , where he made several sculptures for the Zwinger . These are the putti jewelry in the nymph bath , six putti with dolphins in the nymph bath , water-spouting fish in the nymph bath , nymph with the bouquet of flowers , figure group Neptune and Amphitheater and the figure group Triton and Nereid . The group of the four winds also comes from him: on the courtyard side are oyster the south wind with Iris the messenger of the gods and Euris the east wind with Eos the dawn ; on the wall side Zephyr the west wind with Chloeis the flower- bringer and Boreas the north wind with his wife Oreithyia .

In 1717 he was appointed court sculptor. He was granted Dresden citizenship in 1720. Kirchner died in 1732 and was buried in Dresden's Elias cemetery in field A 27-14. He designed his tomb himself; his brother Johann Gottlieb Kirchner completed it after his death. Today the grave monument is in the palace in the Great Garden .
