The Kainan Bay is a Eishafen on the northern edge of the Ross Ice Shelf 59 km northeast of the northwestern end of Roosevelt Island and 50 km north-east of the Bay of Whales .
It was discovered in January 1902 by participants in the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) led by the British polar explorer Robert Falcon Scott . It was named as part of the First Japanese Antarctic Expedition (1910–1912) led by Shirase Nobu , which dared to land on the Ross Ice Shelf here. The bay is named after the expedition ship Kainan Maru . As part of the first Operation Deep Freeze (1955–1956), the Little America V station was built here.
