The Kaiser Wilhelm I monument is an equestrian statue on Kaiserplatz in Karlsruhe . It is located in the center of the square, surrounded by trees, and faces east, so that it seems as if Kaiser Wilhelm I was riding into the city.

history

As early as 1889, one year after the death of the emperor, the Grand Duke of Baden asked for a memorial to be erected for him. The monument was designed by Adolf Heer and inaugurated on October 18, 1897. In 2002, 27 granite tablets with the names of the revolutionaries who had been executed during the Baden Revolution in 1849 were embedded in the ground east of the monument .

Wilhelm I is not depicted as an emperor, but as a general in his uniform . The monument itself is made of bronze and sits on a three-part pedestal made of red Swedish granite, which stands on a stepped pedestal. Until 1943 there was an allegorical figure on each side: in the east a figure of the goddess of victory Victoria , in the west the Klio (muse of history), in the north a lion and in the south a griffin . All figures were melted down in 1943 as part of the metal delivery. On the north side there is a bronze relief depicting the proclamation of Wilhelm as emperor in Versailles . On the south side there is a representation of Baden troops .

In the east, the monument bears the following inscription: "WILHELM I / ERRICHTET VD STADT / KARLSRUHE IN THE YEAR 1897".
