The Imperial Supervisory Office for Private Insurance was from 1901 to 1918 a Reich office for insurance supervision in the German Empire with its seat in Berlin .

The Bismarck Reich Constitution regulated in Article 4 (1) that the Kingdom of the legislative and supervisory powers have the insurance sector with respect. The Imperial Supervisory Office for Private Insurance was set up on the basis of the Reich Law on Private Insurance Companies of May 12, 1901. This law, which came into force on January 1, 1902, regulated in Section V. “Supervision of Insurance Companies” the duties and powers of the authority and stipulated that the Imperial Supervisory Office for Private Insurance should be the supervisory authority for all private insurance that it provided Doing business in more than one state. The supervisory office began its work on July 1, 1901 and initially developed supervisory principles and initially covered all insurance companies subject to supervision.

The President and permanent members were appointed by the Kaiser on the proposal of the Federal Council, the non-permanent members were elected by the Federal Council. An advisory board made up of experts from the insurance sector was used to participate in the supervision, and its members were appointed by the Kaiser for five years at the suggestion of the Federal Council.
