The Kalemouth Suspension Bridge is a road bridge near the Scottish town of Eckford in the Council Area Scottish Borders . In 1977 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

William Mein of Ormiston is responsible for the construction of the Kalemouth Suspension Bridge as the client . Around 1835 Mein hired the engineer Samuel Brown to plan and carry out the work. Brown had built a similar bridge in the Scottish Borders with the Union Bridge in the previous decade. A comparison of the two designs shows Brown's improvement in bridge construction. The stone work was carried out by William Mather .

To use the bridge, a toll had to be paid first. Presumably the nearby Kalemouth Cottage was used for this. In 1845 the crossing cost half a penny for pedestrians . Teams of horses had to pay three pennies, while carriages paid one shilling (twelve pennies).

In 1987 the bridge was restored. The wooden planks were exchanged as well as various metal brackets. Other parts were renewed three years later.

description

The steel chain bridge spans the Teviot south of Roxburgh near the scattered settlement Eckford. The bridge is 57 m long and 5 m wide. Parapets made of crossed steel strips delimit the roadway, which is laid out with wooden planks in the direction of travel. Paired stone pylons at both ends of the bridge span the chains made from eye sticks . Underneath the bridge deck, straps made of eye poles span the wooden substructure.

The Kalemouth Suspension Bridge is of little infrastructural importance today. It leads an unclassified, from the A698 ( Hawick - Berwick-upon-Tweed ) branching off road near the mouth of the Kale Water over the Teviot.
