length 32 km

The Kale Water is a river in the Scottish Council Area Scottish Borders .

course

The river has its source on the north slope of Leap Hill in the Cheviot Hills in the Leithope Forest . The English-Scottish border runs over the top of the 471 meter high hill around 160 meters south. The upper reaches of the Kale Waters to the confluence of several streams near the hamlet of Upper Hindhope is known as the Long Burn .

In the first kilometers mostly fluent in a northeasterly direction, the Kale Water from Upper Hindhope runs strongly meandering north. After about 21 kilometers, about two kilometers before the village of Morebattle , the river turns abruptly to the west and then northwest. After 32 kilometers it flows from the right at Eckford into the Teviot , which drains into the North Sea via the Tweed .

Surroundings

The Kale Water flows through sparsely populated regions of the Scottish Borders. On its course it passes various hamlets and with Morebattle it is the only village. The Roman road Dere Street crossed the upper reaches of the Kale Waters to the Pennymuir fort on the left bank . To the northeast lies the probably Bronze Age barrow Pennymuir Bridge on the right bank.

From its mouth, the B4601 roughly follows the course of the Kale Waters. It crosses the river at Morebattle and then continues eastwards. With the Caverton Mill Bridge , a listed bridge crosses the river beyond Morebattle. Of Berwick-upon-Tweed to Hawick leading A698 crosses the Kale Water just before its mouth. Despite its name, the Kalemouth Suspension Bridge does not span the Kale Water, but the Teviot near the mouth of the Kale Waters.
