Rosettes of Sempervivum calcareum
Flowers of Sempervivum calcareum

The plants form rosettes from 4 cm to 10 cm in diameter, mostly they show a diameter of 6 cm, and their flowering shoots reach a height of 6 cm to 25 cm. The rather small flowers are very whitish in color, mostly whitish-pale pink or white-greenish. They are usually 8 to 10 digits, sometimes up to 12 digits. The leaf rosettes have many mostly bluish-green leaves with red-brown, sharp tips. The tip coloring is comparatively intense and very noticeable. The species forms strong runners up to 4 cm long.

Occurrence

The species occurs in the Maritime Alps and in the Dauphiné . Its vertical distribution is between 500 m and approx. 1500 m. Thus it grows in comparatively deep areas. It mostly occurs on lime, but can also be found on neutral substrates and in hot environments.

use

The species is cultivated in rock gardens and collections. There are a number of locality forms and partly also cultivated varieties, which differ in the color of the leaves. Some are also characterized by their very small rosette size or by a particularly large number of leaves.
