The Kalmyk Khanate was a khanate of the Oirats in the Eurasian steppe , which existed from 1633 to 1771.

The rulership included Kalmykia and the surrounding areas, which stretched from Stavropol to Astrakhan . For over a hundred years, Kalmuck troops protected the Russian border areas from invasions. Kalmyks took part in many Russian campaigns against Muslim tribes from Central Asia , the North Caucasus and Crimea . Frequent raids were directed against the Khanate of Crimea , the Ottoman Empire and the Cubantatars . The other victims of the Kalmyks were the Kazakhs and the Turkmens on the Mangyshlak Peninsula, who were subjugated by the Kalmyks. The khanate was finally annexed by the Russian Empire in 1771.
