Calonymos ben Sabbatai

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kalonymos ben Sabbatai (also: Kalonymos ben Schabatai ) († before 1096) was head of the yeshiva in Worms from around 1070 .

His father was Sabbatai (Schabatai) ben Mose. Kalonymos worked as a rabbi in Rome before joining after the death of Jacob ben Jakar in the Jewish community Worms came. He is considered an authority on the Talmud and Halacha . Explanations and decisions made by him are given in a number of works. A Slichot (liturgical poem and prayer of penance and repentance), in which he describes the sufferings of the Jews of his time, has also come down to us.

He probably died before the persecution of the Jews at the time of the First Crusade in 1096, as he was already old in 1070 and his name is not mentioned in the pogrom's lists of martyrs .
