Kaluđerica ( Serbian - Cyrillic Калуђерица ) is a Serbian settlement in the Belgrade district of Zvezdara . The name comes from the word kaluđer (monk), which means that Kaluđerica means place of the monks .

location

Kaluđerica is the westernmost settlement in the Zvedara district. It is located eight kilometers from Belgrade city center, between Smederevski put street in the north and the main street of Niš in the south. The settlement was built in a depression so that it is very foggy in this special microclimate and snow falls earlier in winter than in the surrounding areas.

population

Kaluđerica is one of the fastest growing settlements in Serbia. In 2009 almost 27,000 people lived there, which corresponds to a population increase of 21% compared to 2002. Kaluđerica is growing steadily, especially due to the refugees from the wars in what was then Yugoslavia and the influx from Bosnia and Herzegovina , Croatia and Kosovo . That is why it is often referred to by journalists as the largest illegal settlement in Europe . The two large Belgrade transport companies (GSP) and Serbian Telecom estimate the population to be between 45,000 and 50,000.
