Kalukonen (Rhaetian tribe)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kalukonen ( latin Calucones ; ancient Greek Καλούκωνες Kalukones ) were an ancient tribe in Rätien . It is not certain whether they were Raetians or Celts . They are to be distinguished from the Germanic tribe of the same name on the middle Elbe . They lived in the Rhine Valley south of Lake Constance, the exact location is disputed, possibly in the area around Chur or north of it in Vorarlberg .

In the year 15 BC The Kalukonen were subjugated by Tiberius during the Alpine campaign and listed as one of the 45 defeated Alpine peoples in the Tropaeum Alpium . Pliny the Elder also refers to this event . They are also mentioned in the geography of Ptolemy , who localized them in Raetia between the Suanetes , Riguskern and Vennontern .
