Comb- toothed slime fish (Salariini) are bottom-dwelling fish that colonize rocky coasts and coral reefs. They have no swim bladder and have to keep themselves in the open water by constantly waving their tail fin, which is why they have the second German name Wippschwimmer .
nutrition
Most of the comb-toothed mucus fish are fry and feed on algae and the invertebrates found in them , such as the genera Ecsenius and Salarias . Others are nutrition specialists and have developed different specializations. The leopard toothbrush ( Exallias brevis ) feeds on coral polyps . The neon-eye combtooth ( Ecsenius midas ) feeds on zooplankton and mingles with the swarms of jewel anthias ( Pseudanthias squamipinnis ), which it resembles in color and diet. The species of the genus Istiblennius graze on algae in the intertidal zone even in extremely low water.
mimicry
Some comb- toothed mucous fish resemble their relatives, equipped with poisonous canine teeth, from the tribe of the saber-toothed mucous fish (Nemophini) in order to benefit from the aversion of predatory fish towards such colored fish. The completely harmless, two-color slimy fish ( Ecsenius bicolor ) , known to many marine aquarists, imitates Enchelyurus flavipes . The imitation of a defensive animal by harmless animals to deceive enemies is called Bates' mimicry .
Like all mucous fish, the comb-toothed mucous fish sleep in narrow caves and crevices into which they swim backwards.
