Kamsar is a port city in the prefecture of Boké in the Boké region in Guinea , about 175 kilometers northeast of Conakry . A standard gauge railway connects the bauxite mine in Sangaredi , which began in 1973, with the port at the mouth of the Rio Nunez . In 1997 the output of the mine was 13 million tons, since then it has decreased continuously and was still 8 million tons in 2019, to which the state Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée (CBG)49 percent is involved. Since then, other mines have been opened by foreign mining companies with state participation. The city's largest employer is the Compagnie des Bauxites de Guinée. Kamsar is a planned city that is operated entirely by the CBG. The city has a continuously functioning water and electricity supply. One of the best hospitals in the country is located in Kamsar. Kamsar is the starting point for national road no.20. René Caillié began his journey to Timbuktu here in 1832 .
