life and work
Kanai Ushū was born in Kōzuke Province, today's Gumma Prefecture. He studied painting under Haruki Nanko (春 木 南湖; 1759–1839) at an early age, then traveled to Edo in 1816 and studied the Confucian classics there under Asagawa Zen'an (朝 川 善 庵; 1780–1846) and poetry under Kikuchi Gozan (菊 地五 山; 1796–1846) and Koga Dōan (古 賀 侗 庵; 1788–1847). He trained under Tani Bunchō and belonged to the poet society "小 不朽 吟 社" (Shōfukuyūin-sha) of the monk painter and poet Unshitsu (雲 室; 1753-1827). Kanai also dealt with early Chinese painting.
Kanai toured the western provinces in 1833 and became known with the group of Rai San'yō (1780-1832). He was a staunch advocate of restoring the position of the Tennō and influenced his student Tazaki Sōun (1815–1898) in this way.
Kanai's representative works include "月 ケ 瀬 探 梅 図 鑑" (Tsukigase tambai zukan), "赤壁 夜遊 図" (Sekiheki yayū-zu, evening fun on the Red Cliff) and "榛 名 富士 図" (Haruna Fuji-zu, Mount Fuji near Haruna) . He was also the author of works dealing with the principles of painting, such as “無声 詩話” (Museishiwa) and Museishisho. In 1940 the Ushū Society (烏 洲 会) published a volume of Ushū's essays, "烏 洲 先生 遺稿" (Ushū sensei ikō).
