Tazaki Sōun ( Japanese 田 崎 草 雲 , real name Tazaki Un ( 田 崎 芸 ); born November 15, 1815 in Edo (today: Tokyo ); died September 1, 1898 ) was a Japanese painter of the Nanga School during the late Edo -Time and Meiji Period .

life and work

Tazaki Sōun was born in Edo as the son of a simple samurai who was in the service of the daimyō of Ashikaga . He was interested in painting from an early age, then supported the imperial side before the Meiji restoration and set up a group of volunteers under the name Seishintai ( 精神 隊 ). He then resigned and traveled across the country to study the works of Chinese masters of the Song and Ming periods , such as Liu Sung-nien (1174-1224), Qiu Ying (1494? -1552) and Shen Zhou (1427 –1509) to study. He trained further under Kanai Ushū , Katō Baiō of the Maruyama Shijō School , and under Haruki Nammei and Tani Bunchō . On the basis of this training, he developed his own variant of nanga painting. In 1890 he became an art appraiser for the imperial household ( 帝室 技 芸 員 , Teishitsu gikeiin ) and a member of the Academy of Arts . He was commissioned to design the ceilings and sliding doors ( 襖 絵 , Fusuma -e ) in one of the imperial palaces.

Tazaki's works are mainly based on those of Haruki and show an influence of Chinese painting, where he combined the style of the so-called Northern School with that of the Southern School. But the influence of the Rimpa School and Yamato-e can also be felt. A series of images is summarized under Bukozanga-satsu ( 撫 古 山 画冊 ). - One of his students is Komuro Suiun .

In 1968 a memorial museum for Tazaki ( 草 雲 美術館 , Sōun bijutsukan ) was opened in Ashikaga .
