The Kanairiktok River is an approximately 350 km long river in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . It is the third largest river in the sub-province of Labrador .

River course

The Kanairiktok River drains a lake-rich area in the center of the Labrador Peninsula near the Québec border . Initially it flows south. It flows through a number of lakes, including Ethyl Lake , Morris Lake and Surf Lake . It then turns east and runs north of Smallwood Reservoir . The reservoir with its dams, completed in 1971, separates about 10 percent of the original catchment area of the Kanairiktok River. The Kanairiktok River takes in the Desolation River from the left and the South Shipiskan River from the right. Later it flows through Snegamook Lake and continues its course to the northeast. Eventually the river flows into the elongated Kanairiktok Bay on the east coast of the Labrador Peninsula. There are several waterfalls along the course of the Kanairiktok River. Two waterfalls near the mouth (at kilometers 9 and 11 with a height of 9.1 and 7.6 m respectively) form an insurmountable obstacle for migratory fish . At river kilometer 28 there is a 4.6 m high waterfall. At river kilometer 66 there are 3.1 m high rapids. At river kilometer 85 there is a 1.8 m high waterfall.

Hydrology

The Kanairiktok River drains an area of 12,274 km². Around 10 percent of the original catchment area was lost in 1971 when the dykes of the Smallwood Reservoir were built. At the level below Snegamook Lake, the mean discharge is 184 m³ / s. In June the river usually carries the largest amounts of water with an average of 643 m³ / s.

Fish fauna

In the river system of the Kanairiktok River freshwater salmon (Ouananiche) are brook trout , lake trout , pike , lake whitefish (lake whitefish), Catostomus Catostomus (longnose sucker) and burbot before.
