Candidates tournament Yugoslavia 1959

The Candidates Tournament Yugoslavia 1959 was the fourth candidate tournament of the World Chess Federation FIDE and took place from September 6th to October 31st, 1959 in the Yugoslav cities of Bled (rounds 1 to 14), Zagreb (rounds 15 to 21) and Belgrade (rounds 22 to 28) . FIDE introduced a four-round tournament with 8 participants as a new mode of competition. The first three candidate tournaments were double-round tournaments. In addition to the six best placed in the 1958 interzonal tournament , Vasily Smyslow also took part as the loser of the 1958 World Chess Championship and Paul Keres as the runner-up in the previous candidate tournament.

It won Mikhail Tal and thus qualified as challenger to world champion Mikhail Botvinnik in the World Chess Championship 1960 .
