Coordinates: 35 ° 39 ′ S , 137 ° 38 ′ E The District Council of Kangaroo Island is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of South Australia . The area is 4,400 km² and has about 4700 inhabitants (2016).
Kangaroo Island is an island off the South Australian coast off the Gulf of Saint Vincent and is about 110 kilometers from the metropolis of Adelaide . There are 19 districts and villages on the island: American Beach, American River, Antechamber Bay, Brownlow, Cygnet River, Emu Bay, Flinders Chase, Harriet, Island Beach, Karatta, Kingscote , MacGillivray, Nepean Bay, Parndana, Penneshaw, Sapphiretown, Stokes Bay, Vivonne Bay and Wisanger. The administrative headquarters of the council is located in Kingscote on the northeast coast of the island, where about 1,800 inhabitants live (2016).

The Kangaroo Island Council has ten members, the nine councilors and the chairman and mayor of the council are elected by the residents of the LGA. Kangaroo Island is not divided into districts.
