Kingscote is the largest town on Kangaroo Island , an island off the coast of South Australia , Australia . With about 1,800 inhabitants, the place is the social center of the island, the administrative center of the Kangaroo Island Council and an important point of contact for tourists. Kingscote is the oldest settlement in South Australia.

Geography and nature

The place is located on the north coast in the central part of the island on a small peninsula between the two bays Bay of Shoals and Nepean Bay . Thanks to offshore islets and the north coast that runs south here, the location is nevertheless reasonably protected. On the northern edge of the village is the small Cape Reeves Point .

There is a colony of little penguins at Kingscote . Daily feeding also attracts numerous pelicans .

history

On July 27, 1836, the South Australia Company founded the Kingscote colony at Reeves Point as the first official European settlement in South Australia. The first settlers came with the Duke of York . It was later suggested that Kingscote could become the capital of South Australia. Since the island did not have sufficient resources for a larger community, the South Australian Company moved about six months later to Adelaide , which had been suggested by scouts sent out.

The history of the area is represented in a small museum in Hope Cottage , a building in Kingscote dating from around 1850. The Reeves Point historic site includes an old mulberry tree. The so-called Old Mulberry Tree was planted in 1836 and is still bearing fruit.

Kingscote has a school, sports fields and tidal seawater swimming pool, hospital, supermarket, post office and administration building. The Kangaroo Island Penguin Center organizes tours to the penguin colonies, feeds the pelicans, and maintains an aquarium. The Aurora Ozone Seafront Hotel with a statue of a mermaid opened in 1907 right on the water in Kingscote. The place has a shipyard , a pier that was formerly used as a landing stage for ferries , and the island's Kingscote Airport .
