Kanimozhi (also: Kanimozhi Karunanidhi; Tamil : கனிமொழி [ ˈkanimoɻi ]; born January 5, 1968 in Chennai ) is an Indian politician of the regional party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and poet . Since 2007 she has been a member of the Rajya Sabha , the upper house of the Indian parliament. Kanimozhi is a daughter of DMK party leader M. Karunanidhi .

biography

Kanimozhi was born on January 5, 1968 in Chennai (Madras). She is the daughter of the longstanding DMK leader and former Chief Minister of the State of Tamil Nadu M. Karunanidhi and his wife Rajathi. After completing her master's degree in economics, she worked for the daily newspaper The Hindu for four years from 1992 . In 1997 she briefly moved to Singapore with her husband , where she worked for the local Tamil newspaper Tamil Murasu . Since her return to India, she has been a member of the board of directors of the cultural organization Tamil Maiyam , which works to promote Tamil art, literature and culture. Kanimozhi is also active in literature and has published three volumes of poetry and two non-fictional works.

After Kanimozhi had been a member of the DMK for some time, but had not been politically active, she was elected by the Tamil Nadu parliament in 2007 to represent the state in the Rajya Sabha.

In connection with the massive corruption scandal surrounding the granting of 2G mobile communications licenses, the Indian federal police accused CBI Kanimozhi of having sponsored the former telecommunications minister A. Raja , who played a central role in the corruption scandal, and of having the "active brain" behind the owner Kalaignar TV , owned by the Karunanidhi family, which received two billion rupees bribes . She herself denies knowing about the money transfers. On May 20, 2011, Kanimozhi was taken into custody. After more than six months in detention, she was released on bail on November 29th.
