Bellinzona Canton
The canton of Bellinzona was a canton of the Helvetic Republic . It was founded in 1798 after the Ticinese had fought under their slogan " liberi e svizzeri " against joining the Cisalpine Republic of Napoleon and for remaining with the Confederation . It included the four upper ennetbirgischen administrative territories that Liviner-Thal , Bollenz , Riviera and Bellinzona .
After just five years, with the act of mediation dictated by Napoléon in 1803, the cantons of Bellinzona and Lugano were united under the new name of Canton Ticino (Ticino) .
