The Kanutigilde (also St. Kanutigilde , Estonian Püha Kanuti gild ) was a guild in the Estonian capital Tallinn until 1920 . It was first mentioned in a document in 1326. However, the guild already owned a house at that time, which is why research has already assumed an earlier existence. Alongside the Olaigilde, it is considered to be the oldest guild in Reval.

history

The canoeist guild probably derives its name from the patron saint of the Knudsgilden , Knud Lavard . Initially, the Kanutilde was a spiritual brotherhood . She later became the Association of Craftsmen of Tallinn, which began the more difficult and more valuable trades. Above all goldsmiths , watchmakers , hat makers , bakers , shoemakers and painters belonged to the canoeist guild. Its members were mostly of German origin. The number of members of the canoe guilds was probably not very large, but all the more elitist. The heyday of the Kanutilde is dated to the 16th century. The head of the guild was the Aldermann . From the Scandinavian Knuds guilds, the Kanutigilde differed as a craft guild, while the guilds in Sweden and Denmark were active as traders' guilds.

In 1326 the Kanutilde owned a house in the center of Tallinn, and in 1404/06 the neighboring house was purchased. A new building was erected in its place in 1470. Every year a big festival was held there, at which the new members were solemnly elected.

Another building was acquired in 1800/02. The ensemble was rebuilt in Tudor style in 1863/64 . The facade is decorated with the figures of Saints Knut and Martin Luther .

In 1920 the canoe guild was officially dissolved. From 1919 to 1932 the Tallinn Technical Center was housed in the building. Today the building is used as a concert, performance and theater hall.
