It was discovered during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . Mawson named the bay after Edward Frederick Robert Bage (1888-1915), astronomer, magnetologist and tidal researcher on this expedition.
