Cape Delgado ( Portuguese Cabo Delgado ) is a cape on the Indian Ocean in the north of the province of Cabo Delgado in Mozambique, which is named after it .

geography

Cape Delgado is located south of the mouth of the Rovuma River and is shaped by its sediments . The town of Quionga is located at Cape Delgado and the town of Mtwara in Tanzania is about 40 km away.

history

After Portugal withdrew from the area in the 18th and 19th centuries, the kingdom of Zanzibar expanded to Cape Delgado. Until the end of the First World War, the cape together with a narrow strip of land ( Kionga triangle ) still belonged to the colony of German East Africa (today's Tanzania). After the end of the war, the new border was moved to the Rovuma River and the cape became part of Portuguese East Africa .
