The Cape Flying Fish is the icy Western Cape of Thurston Island before Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . It marks the border between the Amundsen and Bellingshausen lakes .
It was discovered during an overflight in February 1940 during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it after the schooner USS Flying Fish , one of the expedition ships of the US polar explorer Charles Wilkes in the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842), which came near the cape on this research trip in March 1839 .
