The American cartographer Gardner "Gard" Dean Blodgett (* 1925) mapped it in 1955 using aerial photographs taken during Operation Highjump (1946–1947) of the United States Navy . The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named the cape after Thomas Lewis, gunner on the sloop USS Peacock during the United States Exploring Expedition (1838–1842) under the direction of polar explorer Charles Wilkes .
