The Norwegian whaling entrepreneur and Antarctic explorer Carl Anton Larsen discovered Robertson Island in 1893 and made a rough map. The Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey (FIDS) carried out surveys of the southern part of the island in July 1953. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the Cape in 1957 after George Walter Marsh (1925–1988), doctor and head of the FIDS station in Hope Bay in 1952 and 1953.
