The Cape Petersen is a round and icy cape on the north coast of Thurston Island before Eights Coast of the West Antarctic Ellsworthlands . It is located around 29 km east-northeast of Cape Flying Fish .
A first position determination of the cape was based on aerial photographs of the United States Navy from December 1946 during Operation Highjump (1946-1947). The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named it in 1960 after Carl Oskar Petersen (1891-1941), radio engineer on the first (1928-1930) and second Antarctic expeditions (1933-1935) of the US polar explorer Richard Evelyn Byrd .
