The St. Maria Magdalena chapel stands on a hilltop above the hamlet of Dusch near Paspels in Domleschg in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . Originally, St. Maria Magdalena was a branch of the parish church of St. Lorenz in Paspels.

history

It is unclear when the chapel, a simple east-facing hall church with a retracted apse , was built; What is certain, however, is that it is of Romanesque origin. In the 13th century, the chapel and the shower belonged to the possessions of the Barons von Vaz and were donated to the Churwalden Premonstratensian Monastery . The chapel is first mentioned in a document in the Churwaldner Urbar from 1508: «Sequitur unsers gotzhus zins von den gutern, who belong to the two capelles Sant Lorentzen and Sant Maria Magdalena in Tumilser kirchspel, which are together with iren toe, interest and gutern our gotzhus aygen» . They are not listed in the papal confirmations of monastery ownership from 1208; It is uncertain when the handover to the Churwalden monastery took place. After the Reformation in the 16th century, the chapel was initially unused until it was handed over to the Catholic parish of Paspels by the Churwalden monastery in 1786.

construction

Over the apse is a stone slab roof , over the nave a baroque wooden shingle roof with a steeper roof structure and turret, probably from 1799. The brick medieval bell yoke lies on the flatter Romanesque west gable.

The chapel has been renovated several times. More recently, in 1940, Giacomo Zanolari from Chur uncovered and restored the wall paintings. From 1969 to 1981 the Emmenegger company from Merlischachen and with the cooperation of the cantonal and federal preservation authorities removed the overpainting from 1940 and exposed the frescoes by the Waltensburg master . The pictures on the apse wall show a Marian cycle, the pictures on the north wall show a Maria Magdalena cycle. The entire surface of the picture is slightly to moderately damaged, most of which is older.

Inside, the lower position of the medieval beam ceiling can still be seen on the north wall. A large picture of St. Christopher can be seen on the southern outer wall, similar to that of Sogn Paul in Rhäzüns .

Grave slab

A stone slab made of whitish Vinschgau marble (113 cm high, 54 cm wide and 8.5 cm thick), which had served as an altar slab on the simple bricked block altar, turned out to be a reused Roman grave slab. Due to the choice of words and typeface, it is dated to the 3rd century. The original plate is kept in the Rhaetian Museum in Chur, a copy is shown in the chapel.

The inscription reads: D (is) M (anibus) CLAVDI SENECIANI QUI VI XIT ANNOS XXXX SILVANIA PROCELLA CONIUGI CARISSIM (o) S C B

«The manes of Claudius Senecianus, who lived forty years. Sivania Procella to her dear husband. " The manes are the souls and gods of the dead, and the epitaph was dedicated to them. The meaning of the three letters SCB is unclear. The most likely reading is: S (epulcrum) C (curavit) B (enemerenti) "She took care of the grave of the well-deserved (husband)"
