The Kappa Island ( English Kappa Iceland ) is a 850 m long island in the Palmer Archipelago west of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located in the Melchior Islands group immediately south of the Betaine Island and east of the Theta Islands .
Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped them in 1927 and named them after the Greek letter theta based on the names of the other islands in the group . It was measured during Argentine expeditions in 1942, 1943 and 1948. In Argentina , the island is also known as Isla 1er Teniente López . The namesake here is the pilot José Facundo López from the Fuerza Aérea Argentina , who made the first flight to the Antarctic in 1951 under Argentine leadership.
