The hooded thrush ( Turdus olivater ) is a thrush species that occurs in eight subspecies in Colombia , Venezuela , Guyana , Suriname, and Brazil .

description

The hood throttle reaches a size of 23 to 24 centimeters. The hood, throat and chest of the male of the nominate form Turdus olivater olivater are black. The beak, iris, and eye ring are yellow. The legs are yellow to dull yellowish brown. The top is dull olive brown. The underside is ocher colored. In the female, the hood is dull brown in all subspecies. The beak is yellow. The underside is ocher colored.

The male of the Tepui breed Turdus olivater kemptoni from Venezuela shows rust-brown plumage and a black speckled breast flap. The hood of the male of the subspecies Turdus olivater caucae from Valle del Cauca is black. The throat is dashed in black. The underside is sand-colored without ocher.

  • Turdus olivater caucae ( Chapman , 1914) - Distribution: southwestern Colombia (Valle del Cauca)
  • Turdus olivater paraquensis ( Phelps & Phelps, Jr , 1946) - Distribution: Tepuis in southern Venezuela (Cerro Paraque)
  • Turdus olivater kemptoni ( Phelps & Phelps, Jr , 1955) - Distribution: Tepuis in southern Venezuela (Cerro de la Neblina)
  • Turdus olivater duidae ( Chapman , 1929) - Distribution: Tepuis in southern Venezuela (Mt. Duida)
  • Turdus olivater roraimae ( Salvin & Godman , 1884) - Distribution: Tepuis in southern Venezuela (southern Bolívar), southern Guyana, Suriname, northern Brazil
  • Turdus olivater ptaritepui ( Phelps & Phelps, Jr , 1946) - Distribution: Tepuis in southern Venezuela (Mt. Ptari-tepui)

Habitat and way of life

The hooded thrush inhabits the canopy of rainforests, the border between wet forests and secondary forests, as well as plantations. It is more shy than other thrush species found in the forests.

status

Turdus olivater caucae is a little researched subspecies, of which only a few specimens have been discovered so far. The habitat in Valle del Cauca has been severely destroyed by deforestation . All other subspecies are common and not endangered.
