William Henry Phelps, Jr.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

William Henry Phelps Tucker Jr. ( WH Phelps Jr .; born December 25, 1902 San Antonio de Maturín , Acosta , Monagas , † August 13, 1988 Caracas , Venezuela ) was a Venezuelan ornithologist , geographer and businessman . Many of his acquaintances and friends simply called Phelps Jr. Billy .

School time and career

His father, William Henry Phelps, was also a noted ornithologist and businessman. His mother was Alice Elvira Tucker. He attended the high schools of the Colegio Manuel Muñoz Tébar and the Colegio of the French Fathers in Caracas. This was followed by a visit to the Lawrenceville School in New Jersey in the United States, followed by studies at Princeton University , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1926. After graduation, he returned to Venezuela, where his family founded their first holding company called Sindicato Phelps CA in 1929 . The holding company was active in the real estate business , among other things . Companies such as El Automovil Universal (trade in cars), El Almacen Americano (trade in electrical appliances) and Empresas 1BC were part of the Phelps empire. Initially, Phelps Jr. was vice president of the holding company, but also president in individual areas such as El Almacen Americano and a subsidiary of Corporación Radiofónica Venezolana (Coraven). Similar to his father, he developed a keen business acumen. In 1930, Coraven and Radio Corporation of America worked together to create a new media sector in which both of them founded Broadcasting Caracas, Venezuela 's first commercial radio station. In 1935, Broadcasting Caracas was renamed Radio Caracas and Phelps Jr. became president. 1953 followed the entry into television with the establishment of Radio Caracas Televisión (RCTV), where he also became president. In the 1970s the media space required a reorganization and Phelps lost its influence.

In 1941 he married the Australian Kathleen Phoebe Deery de Phelps (1908-2001) with whom he fathered a son, John Prince Phelps Miller .

Phelps as a scientist

Phelps Jr. was influenced by his father's ornithological interests very early on. Phelps Jr., together with his wife Kathleen and his father, organized numerous expeditions to various places in Venezuela. He, his wife and his father took active part in some research trips in the most remote areas of the Venezuelan mountains, forests and savannahs. The journeys to these areas were arduous and involved an immense logistical effort. He visited Ornis with Phelps own yacht , often together with guests, during at least 49 expeditions in the Caribbean Sea, archipelagos such as Los Testigos , Los Frailes , La Tortuga or Los Roques . 15 other expeditions took him to the Tepuis in the south and southeast of the country. He landed for the first time on the Sarisariñama-Tepui in March 1967. The Amazon regions were also the destination of his travels 15 times. 10 further expeditions took him to the Llanos of the Orinoco plain and 4 to the Sierra de Perijá . In the travels, some of which lasted up to 3 months, he collected an enormous number of bird hides , which the Phelps Foundation benefited from. After his father's death, he took over the Colección Ornitológica Phelps of the Phelps Foundation , founded in 1938 , a collection that today comprises more than 76,300 bird hides. It ranks as the largest in Latin America and one of the most important private collections in the world. The collection also includes a substantial library with more than 6000 books, 800 specialist journals and 5500 reprints. In the period from 1938 to 1988, the collection grew by an average of 3800 bird hides per year. The curator in the museum of the Phelps Foundation was Ramón Aveledo Hostos, with whom he also published together. Together with Rodolphe Meyer de Schauensee and Guy Tudor, he published his most important work, Una guía de las Aves de Venezuela , which was also published in English under the name A guide to the birds of Venezuela . Other articles have appeared in Boletin de la Sociedad Venezolana de Ciencias Naturales , Boletin de la Academia de Ciencias Fisicas, Matematicas y Naturales , American Museum Novitates, and Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington , among others . On many articles he worked with other authors such as Robert William Dickerman , George Francis Barrowclough , Peter Frederick Cannell , David E. Willard , Sadie L. Coats , Eugene Eisenmann (1906–1981), Ernst Mayr (1904–2005), the geologist Guillermo Zuloaga Ramírez (1904–1984) and Alexander Wetmore (1886–1978) together.

He joined the American Ornithologists' Union in 1940 and became an Elective member in 1948 . In 1975 he was elected a Fellow , a Patron in 1986 and an Honorary Fellow in 1986 .

Phelps worked closely with the American Museum of Natural History , since 1952 as a research fellow in the Department of Ornithology. From 1956 to 1959 he was even a member of the museum's advisory body. He was also elected for offices at the International Ornithological Congress (IOC). For example, he became a permanent member of the executive committee. At BirdLife International (formerly: International Council for Bird Preservation) he became President for the Venezuela and Pan America Sections and Vice President of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources .

Honors and Dedication Names

The numerous honors William H. Phelps Jr. received include The Explorers Club Medal, the David Livingstone Centenary Medal from the American Geographical Society (1968), and the Orden Conservación del Ambiente (1986). Some honors were awarded to him after his death, such as the Order of Diego de Losada , which recognized his inestimable value for the country of Venezuela.

Wesley Edwin Lanyon dedicated the name of the genus Phelpsia to the entire Phelps family. In his first description he writes: It is appropriate that this unique Venezuelan endemic be named for the Phelps family (the late William H., the father; Billy, the son; and Billy's wife, Kathy) in recognition of their monumental contribution to our understanding of the ornithology of Venezuela, a tribute long overdue. (It is appropriate to name this unique Venezuelan endemic in honor of the Phelps family (the late William H., the father; Billy, the son, and Billy's wife, Kathy), in recognition of their significant contributions to the study of Venezuelan ornithology, an honor which was long overdue.)

Initial descriptions

Phelps was the first to describe numerous species and subspecies.

The following new bird species were described by Phelps, partly together with his father and Alexander Wetmore:

In addition, there are numerous subspecies such as the tepuis prickly tail ( Roraimia adusta mayri ) (Phelps, WH Jr, 1977), whose scientific name he chose in honor of Ernst Mayr, the red-forehead bundle-nister ( Phacellodomus rufifrons castilloi ) (Phelps, WH & Aveledo, 1987), the Tao ( Tinamus tao larensis ) (Phelps & Phelps, 1949), the scaly-breasted hook-beak ( Diglossa duidae hitchcocki ) (Phelps & Phelps, Jr, 1948), the rust-bellied hook-beak ( Diglossa sittoides coelestis ) (Phelps & Phelps, Jr, 1953), the velvet- bellied hummingbird ( Lafresnaya lafresnayi greenewalti ) (Phelps, WH & Phelps, WH Jr, 1961), the olive-cap tree tyrant ( Phylloscartes chapmani duidae ) (Phelps & Phelps, WH & Phelps Jr, 1951), the graubrust ( Atlapetes-Bush fumidus ) (Wetmore & Phelps Jr., 1953), the three-lined wood warbler ( Basileuterus tristriatus pariae ) (Phelps & Phelps, Jr, 1949), the Longuemare sun nymph ( Heliangelus clarisse violiceps ) (Phelps & Phelps, Jr., 1953) as well as two subspecies of the morning dam he ( Zonotrichia capensis inaccessibilis ) (Phelps & Phelps, Jr, 1955) or ( Zonotrichia capensis perezchinchillorum ) (Phelps & Aveledo, 1984) and many more.
