The Kapuzinerkirche is a Roman Catholic church built in the middle of the 17th century in the inner city of Klagenfurt am Wörthersee .

Building history

The church was built between 1646 and 1649 together with the four-winged, simple monastery of the Capuchin Order , which was directly adjoining the church at that time , and was consecrated to St. Mary . The southern end of the building, where the entrance to the north-facing building is located, now forms the northern end of Bahnhofstrasse, which until the middle of the 19th century was called Breite Bach- or Kanalgasse because the open Feuerbach flowed through it .

The exterior of the Capuchin Church has hardly changed since it was built. The monastery building, on the other hand, was rebuilt as a modern flat roof building east of the church around 1970, the old complex was demolished in 1979.

Building description and interior

The south-facing portal of the church, built in the early Baroque style, is protected by a canopy resting on columns. Above the portal there is a round arched window on both sides, a round window is set in a little higher in the middle. On the steep roof gable is an octagonal roof turret with a small lantern and a curved pointed helmet .

The nave is windowless and has a barrel vault with stitch caps , the just closed chancel is also barrel vaulted. On the east side of the church there are two chapels with an almost square floor plan, which are connected to the nave via ogival openings. On the north side of the choir is the choir room of the monastery brothers with a former altarpiece by August Veiter .

The three unmounted altars are made of dark wood and sparsely gilded. The large altarpiece of the high altar, made in the middle of the 18th century, shows the Mother of God with St. Francis, surrounded by angels. The two side altars fill the narrow wall strips, which are determined by the triumphal arch, which is held in the width of the retracted chancel. In the left altar there is a statue of Fatima made of cedar wood, which was purchased in Portugal in 1951, the top picture shows Saint Joseph with the child and Mary. The right altar is adorned with a picture of St. Joseph with child by August Veiter. On the cafeteria there is a statue of the Sacred Heart by K. Campidell from 1965, in the south-facing chapel there is another statue depicting the Loretto Maria.
