Kara Üveys Pasha

Kara Üveys Pascha († 1591 in Egypt ) was an Ottoman dignitary in the 16th century.

He came from a family in Aydın . He started his career as a Qādī in Tire ( Izmir Province ). He later moved to the entourage of the prince and later sultan Murad III. in Manisa and became his Defterdar after Murad became sultan . A rivalry arose with the Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Pascha , who accused Üveys of financial irregularities in February 1575, but the Sultan took Üveys under protection. According to Ibrâhîm Peçevî , Üveys was also less bribable than other favorites of Murad III. (especially Şemsi Pasha)

Kara Üveys got the office of Beylerbeys of Buda in 1578 as successor to Sokollu Mustafa Pascha . Uvey's Pasha was initially reluctant to take up an office in the province, which was a long way from the capital and the Sultan's court, but he nevertheless set out for Buda and worked his way into his office.

While the war-experienced soldier Sokollu Mustafa Pascha, in his role as Beylerbey, was mainly concerned with the safety of the residents, the tax officer Üveys Pascha was primarily concerned with consolidating the province's economic situation and increasing income. He raised import duties and taxes and fought the black market. Its activities lead to a decline in food imports and a famine, as food from the other provinces of the Ottoman Empire was initially not available quickly enough. The tax hikes led to increased rural exodus and, according to Sandor Takats , the Beylerbey was unpopular with the population. During his reign, the economic situation in the heart of Ottoman Hungary improved. The border regions suffered from the unsafe situation. Kara Üveys Pascha held the office until 1581.

After his tenure in Buda he held various posts in the Arab part of the empire: including provincial governor of Aleppo 1582–1585, Damascus 1585 and again Aleppo 1585–1586. In February 1586 he was called back to Defterdar. From 1587 he was governor of the province of Egypt. In 1590 he was awarded the rank of vizier. In 1591 he died in Egypt.
