The Timiou Prodromou Karea Monastery ( Greek Μονή Τιμίου Προδρόμου Καρέα 'Monastery of the true forerunner [ie John the Baptist ] in Karea', or Karea Monastery for short ) is a monastery from Byzantine times in Attica .

The monastery is located on the western slope of Ymittos , near the Karea quarry , in the municipality of Vyronas .

The foundation probably goes back to the 4th century, which can be deduced from the presence of a tombstone with the inscription "Nikagoris Diakonissis" (ΝΕΙΚΑΓΟΡΗC ΔΙΑΚΟΝΙCCΗΣ). Originally the monastery was subordinate to the patriarch and was named John the Baptist (Αγίου Ιωάννη του βαπτιστή), but was abandoned around 1673 . It was first mentioned in 1575 when the monastery was probably being renovated. The Petraki Monastery in Athens belonged to the property .

The church (Katholikon) is built in the shape of a cross with a dome that rests on four pillars. It was probably built in the last quarter of the 11th century. Only traces of the wall paintings have been preserved in the prosthesis. On the right hand side of the floor of the church there is an old inscription, which may come from a pre-Christian house.
