Karel Žlábek (anthropologist)

Karel Žlábek (born January 8, 1902 in Hrdlořezích u Třeboně , Austria-Hungary ; died May 22, 1983 in Brno ) was a Czechoslovak physician and anthropologist .

Life

Karel Žlábek studied medicine in Prague, received his doctorate and received an assistant position in anatomy. He also studied anthropology and zoology, stayed at the University of Strasbourg in 1928/29 and at the Observatoire Oceanologique de Villefranche in 1929 and received his doctorate in natural sciences from Charles University in 1932. In 1935/36 he conducted research at the Laboratoire de Paléontologie et d'Anatomie Comparée in Paris. He later became a corresponding member of the French Societé d'Anthropologie. In 1937 he became chief assistant in anatomy in Prague. During the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, the Czech universities were closed, and Žlábek worked as a pathologist at a clinic in Vinohrady .

After the war, Žlábek became chief anatomist at the University Clinic in Brno and was given a professorship. He headed the Czech Anthropological Society. His position was abolished in 1962 and he retired in 1970; he worked in research and teaching until 1979. The Anatomické muzeum profesora Karla Žlábka in Brno is named after him.
