Karel Hlaváček (born August 24, 1874 in Prague ; † June 15, 1898 there ) was a Czech poet and painter, a decadent and representative of Czech symbolism .

He published his literary works and reviews of the visual arts in the Moderní revue . He also illustrated for this magazine. Hlaváček was a co-founder and chairman of the Sokol Association in Prague's Libeň district . During his life he could not assert himself with his work and always struggled with financial problems. He died of tuberculosis .

Works

His poetry collections are characterized by musicality.

  • Falk sonnets (Sokolské Sonety) - First collection of poems. It is mostly about verses of appeal with decadent basic features.
  • Late in the morning (Pozdě k ránu) - The collection captivates with its musical variety of sounds, achieved through repetition of words and your own rhyme. He tries to suggest a mood to the reader and uses the sounds of words. He uses images of unreal landscapes in twilight. The poems are melancholy and sad. A typical work of Czech symbolism.
  • Mstivá kantiléna - poems written from the perspective of a person condemned to starvation. The historical background is the revolt of the Dutch Geusen in the 16th century.
  • Psalms (Žalmy) - collection of poems in hymn verses, unfinished.
