The Karelin Islands are a group of islands west of the Antarctic Peninsula . They extend in the archipelago of the Biscoe Islands over a length of 5 km and are located 5 km southeast of Tula Point on Renaud Island .
The islands are first shown on an Argentine map from 1957. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1959 after the Soviet meteorologist Dmitri Borisowitsch Karelin (1913-1953), a pioneer of sea ice research and the development of predictions for its expansion.
