Karen Lujean Nyberg (born October 7, 1969 in Parkers Prairie , Minnesota , USA ) is an American astronaut .

Career

Nyberg graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in mechanical engineering with summa cum laude in 1994 . She then went to the University of Texas doing research on human thermoregulation, focusing on controlling thermoregulation in spacesuits . She received her PhD in 1998.

Astronaut activity

Nyberg was selected for NASA's astronaut program in July 2000. After two years of training, she qualified as a mission specialist.

NEEMO 10

In 2006, she took part in NEEMO 10 , a deep-sea training and simulation exercise in the Aquarius underwater laboratory. The purpose of this mission was to prepare for future flights to the moon and Mars. Movement concepts were tested and the gravitational pull of the moon or Mars was simulated with weighted backpacks. Communication techniques as well as the use and navigation of remote controlled robots on the surface of the moon were also examined.

STS-124

Nyberg was assigned to the STS-124 mission as a mission specialist on March 21, 2007 . The launch took place on May 31, 2008, and returned on June 14, 2008. Nyberg was a visitor to the International Space Station for eight days .

STS-132

Nyberg was nominated for the shuttle flight STS-132 , but was taken out of the crew on August 11, 2009 for medical reasons that were not explained in more detail and replaced by Michael Good . NASA emphasized that it was a temporary ailment, that Nyberg was accompanying the flight in a technical role, and that further flight assignments would be possible for her.

ISS expeditions 36/37

Nyberg was assigned to ISS expeditions 36 and 37 as a flight engineer in February 2011 . From May 29, 2013 she worked on board the International Space Station. The return to earth took place on November 11, 2013.
