Karin Bettina Friedl

Karin Bettina Friedl (* 1940 ) is a German Americanist.

Life

She studied English , German and art history (1971: doctorate in English ( Heidelberg ) and habilitation in American studies ( Tübingen )). She taught at the Universities of Heidelberg, Mainz - Germersheim , Mannheim , Tübingen, Stuttgart and Greifswald , in 1996 and 2002 as a visiting professor at Smith College and from 1993 to 2005 as a professor of American literature and culture with a focus on visual culture studies and gender studies at the University of Hamburg . From 1973 to 1974 she was a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University . From 2001 to 2002 she was a fellow at the Center for the History of American Civilization at Harvard University .

She specializes in American literature and painting, documentary film, the phenomenon of fashion, and the art of clothing in American literature and culture.
