Karin Bruns

Karin Bruns (* 1957 ; † October 7, 2016 in Linz ) was a media and literary scholar and since 2003 professor for media theories at the University of Artistic and Industrial Design in Linz .

life and work

Karin Bruns studied literature and linguistics, social psychology and social anthropology at the Ruhr University Bochum until 1984 . After completing her master's degree with the thesis Human Machines and Machine Men : Investigations into Subject Formation in Science Fiction , she completed her doctorate in 1993 with cinema myths 1920–1945. The film drafts of Thea von Harbou . From 1987 to 2000 she was one of the organizers of the women's film festival “femme totale” in Dortmund (today: Internationales Frauen-Film-Festival IFFF) and curated film and video programs in Germany and England. She taught at the Ruhr University in Bochum, the University of Fine Arts Braunschweig and the University of Television and Film in Munich . In 2004 she qualified as a professor at the comprehensive university in Essen with the thesis Fleeting Apparitions. Political image functions of audiovisual body presentations between 1900 and 2001.

Since 2003 she has been Professor of Media Theories, since 2004 Head of the Institute for Media and since 2009 Chairwoman of the Senate of the University of Artistic and Industrial Design Linz. Her research interests were: theories of digital media and intermediality; Theory and history of the 'format'; Gender and media; Cultures of Rumor on the World Wide Web.
