Caja Thimm (born June 12, 1958 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German media scientist . She has been Professor of Media Studies and Intermediality at the University of Bonn since 2000 .

Professional background

Caja Thimm studied from 1978 to 1984 at the Universities of Munich, Heidelberg , San Francisco State and UC Berkeley and then did a doctorate in German linguistics . She then worked until 1998 as a research assistant in the Collaborative Research Center “Language and Situation” at Heidelberg University.

From 1998 to 1999 she was a scholarship holder of the Margarete von Wrangell habilitation program for women in the state of Baden-Württemberg and completed her habilitation in 1999 at the New Philology Faculty with the thesis "Age-Language-Gender". Since 2000 she has been a professor at the University of Bonn in the field of media studies , where she was managing director of the Institute for Communication Studies from 2005 to 2008. Caja Thimm has worked as a visiting professor at various universities, for example at the University of California in Santa Barbara , where she received the Faculty Award for Graduate Teaching in 2005, as well as at the University of Wales in Cardiff and the University of Liverpool and the Université de Bourgogne (Dijon).

From 2007 to 2010 Caja Thimm was deputy chairwoman of the Federal Government's 6th Commission on Elderly Reports and from 2009 to 2011 a member of the Rhineland-Palatinate government's commission of inquiry on the subject of “Responsibility in the media world”. She advises various state and federal institutions on online media / social media and is a reviewer for the German Academic Exchange Service , the German Research Foundation (DFG) and other institutions.

Her main research interests are in the areas of online communication, especially in the area of ​​social media, corporate communication and "Age and Media". She is currently head of the DFG project “Deliberation on the Net: Forms and Functions of Digital Discourse Using the Example of the Twitter Microblogging System”, which is part of the DFG research area “Mediatized Worlds - Communication in Media and Social Change”. In addition, since 2014 she has had a research cooperation (DAAD project “Procope”) with the Université de Bourgogne / Dijon on the subject of “Twitter in the EU election campaign: A comparison of Twitter communication between German and French candidates in the 2014 European election campaign”.

Local politics

In 1988 she was elected to the Heidelberg City Council and confirmed again in 1994 and 1999. In 1993/94 she was chairman of the Green Alternative parliamentary group in the local council. In 2006 she ran for the mayoral election in Heidelberg. In the second ballot she received 45.1 percent of the votes cast and was therefore defeated by her non-party competitor Eckart Würzner.
