Karl-Georg Niebergall

Karl-Georg Niebergall (* 1961 ) is a German logician and philosopher and professor of logic and philosophy of language at the Humboldt University in Berlin .

Life

Niebergall studied mathematics in Darmstadt from 1982 . He then studied logic and philosophy of science at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich (LMU), particularly under Godehard Link and Matthias Varga von Kibéd . 1995 Niebergall was at LMU in philosophy doctorate . His doctoral thesis on the topic of “On the Metamathematics of Non-Axiomatisable Theories” was awarded the Stegmüller Prize of the Society for Analytical Philosophy . In 1997 Niebergall was a visiting scholar at Stanford University and from 1998 senior assistant at the Institute for Philosophy at LMU Munich. His habilitation followed in 2002 with a thesis on the subject of “Basics of Mathematics. Reducibility and Ontology ". Since October 2008, Niebergall has held the Chair for Logic and Philosophy of Language at the Philosophical Institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Niebergall's research is primarily concerned with the metamathematic investigation of formal systems . His focus is particularly on mereological theories and theories of infinity . Niebergall also took a critical look at the work of Nelson Goodman , David Hilbert and William W. Taits .
