The Society for Analytical Philosophy e. V. (GAP) is a philosophical society whose purpose is the promotion and communication of analytical philosophy in German-speaking countries. She is an institutional member of the European Society for Analytical Philosophy (ESAP).

The GAP was founded in Berlin in 1990 and currently (2019) has over 1000 members. After the German Society for Philosophy, it is the second largest philosophical society in the German-speaking area and the largest society for analytical philosophy in Europe. Honorary members of the GAP are Franz von Kutschera (since 1997), Günther Patzig (since 1997), Hans Albert (since 2003), Erhard Scheibe (since 2003), Georg Meggle (since 2006) and Ansgar Beckermann (since 2018). Honorary Presidents of the GAP are Wolfgang Stegmüller (since 1990) and Georg Meggle (since 2018).

President

Georg Meggle was the founding president from 1990 to 1994. He was followed by Julian Nida-Rümelin (1994–1997), Carlos Ulises Moulines (1997–2000), Ansgar Beckermann (2000–2006), Thomas Spitzley (2006–2012), Achim Stephan (2012–2015) and Thomas Grundmann (2015– 2018) in the office of President. Geert Keil has been President of the Society for Analytical Philosophy since 2019 .

activities

The most important activity of the GAP is the organization and implementation of an international congress for analytical philosophy, which takes place every three years, which is intended to promote the awareness of analytical philosophy and the exchange among analytical philosophers. The following conferences have taken place so far: GAP.1 (Saarbrücken 1991), GAP.2 (Leipzig 1994), GAP.3 (Munich 1997), GAP.4 (Bielefeld 2000), GAP.5 (Bielefeld 2003), GAP.6 ( Berlin 2006), GAP.7 (Bremen 2009), GAP.8 (Konstanz 2012), GAP.9 (Osnabrück 2015), GAP.10 (Cologne 2018).

Since 1994, the Wolfgang Stegmüller Prize for the promotion of young scientists for outstanding work in the field of analytical philosophy, which is named after the German-Austrian philosopher Wolfgang Stegmüller , has been awarded as part of the GAP congresses . Furthermore, the GAP has been awarding the De Gruyter Prize for unpublished monographs in the field of ontology or metaphysics, which was founded by De Gruyter Verlag , since 2000, and the Frege Prize named after Gottlob Frege for outstanding achievements since 2009 a German-speaking philosopher in the field of analytical philosophy. In addition, the society, together with the journal Grazer Philosophische Studien, annually awards an essay prize for students and postgraduates.

Cooperations

The society cooperates with the philosophical journals Dialectica , Knowledge , Facta Philosophica , Grazer Philosophische Studien and Logical Analysis and History of Philosophy . Cooperating philosophy societies abroad are the Austrian Ludwig Wittgenstein Society, the European Society for Analytical Philosophy , the Polish Society for Logic and Philosophy of Science and the Italian Society for Analytical Philosophy.
