Karl-Hermann Mühling (2020)

Karl-Hermann Mühling (born February 10, 1961 in Gießen ) is a German agricultural and nutritional scientist at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . He is University Professor for Plant Nutrition and Director at the Institute for Plant Nutrition and Soil Science at Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. He is also President of the Scientific Societies for Agricultural, Forestry, Nutrition, Veterinary and Environmental Sciences (Dachverband Agrarforschung e.V. DAF) and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science).

biography

education and profession

Mühling, the son of an agricultural master, grew up on a farm in Hungen-Bellersheim ( Hesse ). After graduating from high school (1980), an agricultural training followed with a successful agricultural internship examination. Mühling graduated from the Justus Liebig University in Gießen with a degree in agricultural engineering (Dipl-Ing. Agr.) And was then awarded a Dr. agr. PhD (1991).

This was followed by a position as a research assistant (1990–1991), scientific (C1) assistant (1992–1997) and academic advisor (1998–2000) at the Institute for Plant Nutrition and Soil Science at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel. In 1998 , Mühling completed his habilitation and was qualified to teach ( venia legendi ) in the field of plant nutrition at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. After receiving a research grant from the German Research Foundation (DFG), he completed a three-year stay abroad (1999–2001) at the Department of Land, Air and Water Resources at the University of California at Davis (USA), first as a DFG fellow and then as a postdoctoral fellow.

In 2003, he followed the call of Professor (C3) for plant nutrition with a focus on biochemistry of plant nutrition at the Institute for Plant Nutrition at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. In 2007 he followed a second call as professor (W3) for plant nutrition at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.

research

Mühling teaches and researches in the interdisciplinary subject of plant nutrition. This means that in his laboratory all macro (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S) and micronutrients (B, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cl, Mo, Fe, Ni) as well as useful elements (J, Si, Co) and pollutants (Na, Al, Cd) in the soil and in the plant are examined. In this way, physiological and ecological aspects of plant nutrition can be processed. Nutritional physiology is processed using biochemical and molecular methods.

With the help of mass spectrometry (IRMS and ICP-MS), the influence of mineral and organic fertilization on the nutrient balance in the soil is examined. In addition, current questions about the quality of plant-based food as well as the adaptation mechanisms of crops to abiotic stress (e.g. flooding, drought and salt stress) in marginal (acidic and saline) soils are answered with the expected climate change. In recent years he and his colleagues have written over 170 publications, of which over 120 have appeared in international and peer-reviewed journals (original works). His results are published in over 40 different scientific journals (peer-reviewed journals) on plant nutrition, plant physiology, botany, soil science, agronomy, food science. , Chemistry (Biological, Agricultural and Food Chemistry) and Environmental Science (Environmental Science) published. In addition, he and his employees have presented over 150 lectures and 170 posters at national and international conferences to date.

Teaching

Mühling offers teaching in German and English in B. Sc. and M. Sc. courses in agricultural, nutritional and environmental sciences for the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel. In the bachelor's degree courses, modules with lectures, seminars and internships (4 hours per week per semester) on plant nutrition theory as well as fertilization and nutrient balance of soils are taught. In the master’s program in Crop Science, two modules are also offered for study with lectures, seminars and internships on nutritional physiology and nutrition biochemistry. In addition, there is a range of courses in the English-language master’s course “Agricultural Genomics” with several modules on “Biochemistry, Proteomics and Molecular Plant Nutrition”. For environmental scientists , a module “Nutrient Cycling and Sustainability” is offered in the English-language master’s course “Environmental Management”. Mühling is a member of the School of Sustainability and Kiel Life Science at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel.

So far, more than 20 doctoral, 60 master and 55 bachelor theses have been completed experimentally with him as a supervisor. More than half of his doctoral and post-doctoral students come from abroad (China, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Sudan, Vietnam, Brazil, Ghana). Five of his doctoral students completed their doctorate with excellent (summa cum laude) and a total of 12 national and international doctoral and sponsorship awards were won by his doctoral students . So far, he has been able to lead four of his academic assistants to habilitation . Seven of his employees have already been appointed or appointed to professorships (Adjunct (Apl.-Prof.), Assistant (W1), Associate (W2) and Full (W3) Professorships) in Germany and abroad.
