The Karl-Theodor-von-Dalberg-Gymnasium in Aschaffenburg is a musical and linguistic high school named after the last Arch Chancellor of the Holy Roman Empire and Elector of Mainz, Karl Theodor von Dalberg .

School history

The school was founded in 1875 as the Royal Bavarian Higher Female Educational Institution in Aschaffenburg in the Schönborner Hof and was the first state institution of its kind in Bavaria. It was divided into a high school for girls and a seminar for primary school teachers. The number of students increasing every year made an expansion of the school inevitable.

After the foundation stone was laid on April 25, 1905, the Royal Female Educational Institute Aschaffenburg was opened on October 2, 1906 in Grünewaldstrasse. In 1912 the teacher training college had six classes. From 1918 to 1925, the school became the Bavarian Higher Female Education Institute in Aschaffenburg , and from 1925 to 1935 it became the Aschaffenburg Teachers Training Institute.

The school had to close due to severe damage from air raids on November 22, 1944 and was reopened on June 18, 1946 as a teacher training institute with a secondary school for girls. Ten years later the teacher training college was closed. At the beginning of the school year 1956/1957 it was called Deutsches Gymnasium Aschaffenburg and was a higher school for girls and boys. In 1965 the school was named Karl-Theodor-von-Dalberg-Gymnasium ; the nine-year music grammar school was introduced. In 1972/73 the modern language branch was added to the musical branch.

In 2005, the grammar school celebrated the 200th birthday of Dalberg's idea to reform the school system with numerous musical performances, the 130th anniversary of the founding of the school in Schönborner Hof, the 100th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone and the 40th anniversary of the name of the building.
