Karl Wilhelm Fricke Prize

The Karl Wilhelm Fricke Prize is awarded to personalities and initiatives "who, with their commitment, strengthen awareness of freedom, democracy and moral courage." The Federal Foundation for the coming to terms with the SED dictatorship is awarded . The award takes place annually.

The aim of the award is to “promote critical discussion of the communist dictatorships , strengthen the anti-totalitarian consensus in society and consolidate democracy and the internal unity of Germany ”.

Projects or works can be awarded for “outstanding scientific work, literary or artistic works, innovative and lively educational projects, documentary films or journalistic works”.

The namesake

The award is named after the journalist and publicist Karl Wilhelm Fricke . The prize was first awarded on June 15, 2017 as a reconditioning prize and will be "henceforth called the Karl Wilhelm Fricke Prize".

The founder

The founder is the publicist, physician and former escape helper Burkhart Veigel . He “wants the confrontation with totalitarian regimes to continue. The award should therefore not only be recognition for outstanding achievements in this field, but also an impetus to deal with these topics further. "

Prize money

The prize is endowed with 20,000 euros and “should at the same time enable the award-winning work to be continued”.

In addition, a special prize worth 5,000 euros will be awarded from 2018.

From 2018, the winners will be selected by a prominent jury. The jury, chaired by Marianne Birthler , the former federal commissioner for the Stasi files , also includes former Federal President Horst Köhler , the Russian human rights activist Irina Scherbakova , the writer Marko Martin , the donor of the Burkhart Veigel award and Anna, the managing director of the Federal Foundation for the Processing of the SED dictatorship Kaminsky.
