Karl Bernhard (chemist)

Karl Bernhard (born February 19, 1904 in Winterthur ; † 1993 ) was a Swiss biochemist and director of the Physiological-Chemical Institute at the University of Basel .

Bernhard studied in Geneva and Zurich and received his doctorate in Geneva in 1932. He then worked as an assistant at the Physiological-Chemical Institute at the University of Zurich, where he completed his habilitation in 1938 and was then senior assistant and from 1944 titular professor. In 1949 he became a full professor in Basel. He was also the director of the Swiss Vitamin Institute. In 1958 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

His main area of ​​work was fat metabolism, but he also worked on carotenoids .
